Sustainable pots for Home grown Plants

“Sustainability” is a word which is being talked about enormously and vigorously these days. Scientist ,researchers ,environmentalist from all walks of world wants to shape the future of world in a sustainable and responsible manner. Even a common man is thinking regarding changing trends of world aspiration towards sustainable and economical models.

In todays world where one way, leaders are searching their roots in traditional and valuable history  and some people are going gaga over modern technologies of the new parallel world. I believe , Modern world is enriched by values and pillars of diversified past of the societies and countries which is being nourished since centuries.

Pottery is one of ancient culture of art ,source of income and a rich method to propagate and penetrate through the time and space and it had seen various paradigm shift in history of mankind.

Let me tell you, with the increasing awareness of climate change ,world is trying to save it or at least getting  ready to behold  the environmental pressure.one method is planting trees and plants which gives positive energy oxygen, timbers ,shelter etc. In this modern people are experimenting with different kind of plants and their caretaking as per their capacity and fondness.

Plants pots are also getting affected by this changing scenarios as well. From Terracotta to clay ,from Sand mix clay to plaster of peris   ,from plastic to Styrofoam its being implemented and innovated in various sustainable ways also.

Being the most sustainable method of making Pots from clay ,the art is losing its way due to economical equations ,non availability of good quality clay and transportation complications.

My idea is simple to mix clay with coconut ropes ,which will make pot more lighter due to its volume, cheaper due to its availability and having capacity of withholding moisture for a long time due to increase in porosity  so that less water could be used for more days per pot.

One major benefit is  when rope is mixed with wet clay and formed into Ready pot its inner unpolished corrugated surface (due to structure of the rope) will give more strength and flexibility.

Best part is per Pot, less than half or almost half of the total clay(has to be calculated on the basis of strength and usage)  would be required and would  be a better economically and environmentally viable solution. Even  in those area where coconut or bamboo farming is being escalated  from grass root level ,coconut shell in semi powdered form or bamboo powder can be used extensively in place of ropes.

Personally I feel it should be researched at micro level and its economic viability should be quantifed, customised and improvised as a sustainable income model for low earning people already in this business and market it in aware and informed societies and sections India.
